In brief
A popular term for tiredness blamed on worn-out adrenal glands. healthdirect states that adrenal fatigue is not a recognised medical condition.
- Common causes of tiredness include a busy schedule, lack of exercise, poor diet, poor sleep, too much caffeine and alcohol use.
- See your doctor if fatigue lasts more than 2 weeks and is not getting better.
How it works
Adrenal insufficiency, such as Addison's disease, is a recognised medical condition in which the adrenal glands do not make enough cortisol and aldosterone, but it is not the same as adrenal fatigue. Cortisol tests are used to diagnose Cushing's syndrome and Addison's disease, which are both rare.
If you have unexplained tiredness that does not go away after resting, see a doctor. healthdirect advises caution with supplements marketed for adrenal health, as they may not be safe or effective.
